Immunologic
Response
to
Infectious
Disease
Plants and animals infected by a microbial parasite demonstrate a specific response. This contributes both to the recovery from a given disease and to the protection against reinfection with the specific parasite. The mechanisms of host defence that keep microbial parasite in check are called immune response.
The mechanisms include skin and mucous membranes, which form protective surface barriers; the phagocytic cells; inflammation; and antimicrobial substances in the tissues and body fluids.
