Infections
Some viruses establish long-term, even permanent, infections if the host defence mechanisms fail. The following three fact ors account for the failure of host defences. Host deficiency. This includes general deficiencies of the immunologic system, either congenital or acquired, or isolated unresponsiveness to a specific virus.
Virus mediated abrogation of host defences. Lymphocytes - while undergoing blastogenesis can support the replication of viruses. A virus, therefore, may induce blastogenesis of the specific antigen-reactive T-cells. This facilitates lytic infection and depletion of T cells.
