Immunopathology of Viral Infections

Some viruses establish long-term, even permanent, infections if the host defence mechanisms fail. The following three fact ors account for the failure of host defences. Host  deficiency. This includes general deficiencies of the immunologic system, either congenital or acquired, or isolated unresponsiveness to a specific virus.

Virus mediated abrogation of host defences. Lymphocytes - while undergoing blastogenesis can support the replication of viruses. A virus, therefore, may induce blastogenesis of the specific antigen-reactive T-cells. This facilitates lytic infection and depletion of T cells.

Some viruses can infect stem cells or peripheral lymphoid tissues, and thereby produce generalized immunosuppression. Immunologic abrogation of host defences. Some, viruses remain in, the circulation as infectious virus-antibody complexes. The nonneutralizing antibody inhibits the binding of additional antibody molecules to critical sites on the virus.
