Origin of antibody Diversity
An individual can synthesize a very large number of specific antibodies in response to the correspondingly large number of foreign, antigenic determinants. It has been seen that the amino acid sequences of the V regions of the light and heavy chains determine the structural basis of antibody diversity. What is the mechanism for generating the diverse structure of antibodies? The theories proposed to account for antibody diversity include the germline theory, the somatic recombination theory and the somatic hypermutation theory.
