Transplantation technology dates back to 1870 when J. Reverdin grafted bits of skin to wounded tissues. A kidney transplant was done in 1954 between identical twins. However, later attempts of kidney transplant were less successful. During the next few decades, transplantation technology improved considerably. At present there exist four types of transplantations or grafts, depending upon the genetic relationship between donor and recipient.
