Biodeterioration of Paint and Painted Surfaces

Paints and painted surfaces, like most organic substrates are subject to attack by  both microorganisms and macro organisms. The degree to which they are attacked is governed by the chemical structure of the organic materials included in the formulation and the influence of physical and chemical environment on both the substrate and the invading organisms

Painted surfaces exibit evidence of mould  spotting or discolouration under certain environmental conditions. This deterioration is due to the products of microbial metabolism of organic constituents of the paint. Although a large number of microorganisms were observed or isolated from mouldy painted surfaces (mildewed), most of them were chance inhabitants. At least four fungi and one bacterium were isolated in sufficient numbers. These are mainly responsible for the disfigurement or deterioration of painted surfaces.
