Foods From Waste

Foods From Waste - Food and fodder yeasts also manufactured from waste materials such as wood shavings and sawdust, straw, corn cobs, and, other agricultural wastes. A variety of substrates can be used. Yeasts  capable of assimilating diverse sources of carbon are more acceptable than S cerevisiae

The asporogenous yeast, Candida utilis (Torulopsis utilis) is commonly used because of its marked ability to assimilate various carbon sources, including xylose, galactose, and a wide range of organic acids

Torula are grown on sulphite liquor from pulp and paper mills: After removal of wood fibres for paper, the waste sulphite liquor contains valuable wood sugar. Yields of upto 50 percent of the total reducing sugar consumed, in term of dry Torula, are obtainable.
