Permeation

Permeation
Permeation includes the processes of simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport. These main categories of membrane transport have been subsequently subdivided.

(A) Simple or passive diffusion. Transport of metabolites across the membrane along the concentration gradient and without the use of a carrier molecule is called simple diffusion.

(B) Facilitated diffusion resembles simple diffusion in that it does not require energy and takes place along the concentration gradient. It differs, however, in being stereospecific, in showing saturation kinetics and in requiring a carrier

(C) Active transport can take place across the concentration gradient and requires energy. It includes group translocation, membrane bound transportand binding protein transport.
