Transport of Non-PTS System

Transport of Non-PTS System - Organisms like E. coli and Styphimurium contain the PTS, but can also take up sugars such as lactose which apparently do not involve the PTS.

Whether a sugar is a PTS sugar or a non PTS sugar depends on the organism.

In S. aureus and E. coli glucose, fructose and mannose are PTS sugars. In S. aureus all sugars except maltose and perhaps glycerol are PTS sugars.

Lactose is a PTS sugar in S. aureus but is a non PTS sugar in E. coli
