Adansonian Approach - Numerical Taxonomy

Adansonian Approach - Numerical Taxonomy - This was first suggested by a French biologist, Michel Adanson, a contemporary of Linnaeus, in the 18th century. Here the taxonomic arrangement is based upon quantification of the similarities and differences among organisms.

There are used as many characters as possible, each of which is of an equal weight.

It is assumed that if each phenotypic character is given equal weighting, it should express numerically the taxonomic distances between organisms, in terms of the number of characters they share, relative to the total number of characters examined.

The results are fed into a computer so as to define the similarities and differences between microorganisms and thus to indicate possible natural groupings
