Macromolecular Approach

Macromolecular Approach - The above mentioned approaches are based mainly on the phenotypic traits. The growth of molecular biology has now opened up a number of new approaches to microbial taxonomy.

For identification and classification of bacteria a range of criteria are now used. Some of the criteria are represented. The shape and size of organism, its oxygen, pH and temperature requirements, and laboratory culture characteristics are considered.

Photosynthetic ability, capsule production, staining reaction, sporeforming ability and type of movement are other characteristics: Biochemical digestion of certain carbohydrates, proteins and fats are also considered. There are used certain techniques that give insights into the genetic characters of organisms.
