Caused by rhinoviruses (50%), coronaviruses (15-20%). 10% of all colds caused by several other viruses.
There are at least 113 serotypes of rhinoviruses.
Symptoms are sneezing, excessive nasal secretions and congestion.
Rhinoviruses thrive at a temperature slightly below that of normal body temperature (found in the upper respiratory tract).
A single rhinovirus particle deposited on the nasal mucosa is sufficient to cause a cold.
