Break point chlorination It is the name given to a method of chlorination where chlorine is added until the organic matter present in water is completely oxidised, and there remains a small quantity of "free" chlorine. The" point" at which free chlorine begins to appear is known as the break point. If further chlorine is added beyond the break point, it will result only in an increase of free chlorine. The 'free' residual chlorine may be estimated by the Orthotoluedine-Arsenite (OTA) test.
