Effects of Advanced Eutrophication

Effects of Advanced Eutrophication
1. Lush algae create problems of water colour, taste and odour, resulting in increased costs of water treatments.

2. The water is less attractive for boating, swimming and fishing.

3. The more desirable fish may be eliminated.

4. Irrigation canals may become clogged.

Remedies
The remedial measures to combat eutrophication include:
1. Removal of nutrients from waste waters, a very costly procedure.

2. Bypassing of lakes and diverting of waste waters to streams below the lake by pipeline.

3. Removal of excessive weeds and debris, and dredging of lake sediments.

4. Application of chemicals to destroy algal growth, copper sulphate and chlorine being commonly used for this purpose.
