Water recycling proves to be expensive hence it is practised only when:

.There is a large scale use of water which is inferior to the quality of available water supply.

When the used water requires minimum treatment since it is not used as a raw material (thermal plants where it is used for cooling purpose only), sterilising, etc. (in food industries)

Processing plants where water can be used with minimum treatment like cleaning vegetables and washing vehicles.

The following waters can be recycled:
Sewage waters
Cooling tower waters
Metal industry effluent recycling
Engineering industries effluent recycling
Textile industries effluent recycling
Bottle wash effluent recycling
Common effluent treatment plant discharge recycling

Waste waters are chiefly recycled using the methodologies of membrane separation technology. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration is a membrane fractionation process used to separate and concentrate micromolecules and colloids from water. These membrane separation systems are of spiral wound polyamide construction.

Water recycling has proven to be effective and successful in creating a new and reliable water supply, while not compromising on public heath. Non-potable reuse is a widely accepted practice that will continue to grow. Advances in wastewater treatment technology and health studies of indirect potable reuse have led many to predict that planned indirect potable reuse will soon become more common.
