Waterborne Diseases

Waterborne Diseases
Water is contaminated by various sources, and it is evident that the microbes present in water are responsible for the outbreak of various diseases.

The most common waterborne diseases and their causative microbial agents are listed.

Several other categories of the disease other than those listed

1. Water-washed diseases are those resulting from inadequate personal hygiene because of scarcity or inadequate water supply, e.g. Typhus.

2. Water-based diseases are those arising from parasites which use an intermediate host that lives in or near water bodies.

3. Water-related diseases are borne by insect vectors which have habitats in or near water, e.g. Malaria

4. Water-dispersed diseases spread infections whose agents proliferate in freshwater and enter the human body, e.g. Legionellosis.
