Mechanical Process of Weathering

Rocks heat up during the day and cool down during the night. Different minerals present in the rocks expand (day) and contract (night) at different rates (since the minerals differ in their coefficient of expansion, some expand and contract more than others). This differential expansion and contraction of minerals is a continuous process leading to cracks on the rock surface.
