Soil Fungi
In most well-aerated soils, fungi are present in large numbers. They are present in the form of mycelial bits, rhizomorphs or spores. All fungi are heterotrophic in nutrition and dominate acid soils. Some can tolerate pH beyond 9.0 also. In the lab, fungal cultures can be obtained in pure form by acidifying the media or adding bacteriostatic agents like rosebengal and streptomycin.
Some important fungal genera include Aspergillus, Mucor, Rhizopus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Curvularia, Alternaria, Helmithosporium, Cladosporium etc.
