Mitosis

Mitosis - The replication and partitioning of the genetic information in a eucaryotic cell involves a complex process known as mitosis. In brief, mitosis consists of four stages namely, the prophase, the metaphase, the anaphase and the telophase.

In the prophase, the chromosomes are seen as intact, compact structures and this is accompanied by a rapid assembly in the nuclear region of a bipolar spindle shaped micro tubular structure called the mitotic apparatus. Its formation is accompanied by the disintegration of the nucleolus. In the metaphase, the chromosomes align in the equatorial region of the spindle and each chromosome splits longitudinally into two identical chromatids.

In the anaphase, one set of the chromatids then move to each pole of the mitotic apparatus and in the telophase, the appearance of the nuclear membrane and the organization of the daughter nuclei occurs. Cell division occurs during the terminal stage of mitosis and the plane of division is the equatorial plane of the spindle.
