Dilution
Method -
This
is
often
used
to
determine
the
smallest
amount
of
antibiotic
necessary
to
inhibit
a
test
organism.
This
amount
is
known
as
the
minimum
inhibitory
concentration
(MIC).
A
set
of
tubes
with
different
concentrations
of
a
particular
antibiotic
are
prepared.
The
tubes
are
inoculated
with
the
test
organism,
incubated,
and
examined
for
growth
of
bacteria.
Growth
is
seen
to
diminish
as
the
concentration
of
antibiotic
increases,
and
eventually
an
antibiotic
concentration
may
be
observed
at
which
growth
fails
to
occur.
This
is
the
Minimum
Inhibitory
Concentration-MIC
