Antiseptics
and
disinfectants
may
be
either
bactericidal
or
bacteriostatic.
The
former
agent
kills
the
microbes
whereas
the
latter
temporarily
prevents
their
further
multiplication.
The
effectiveness
of
a
chemical
agent
is
based
on
phenol
coefficient
(PC).
This
number
indicates
the
ability
of
a
particular
antiseptic
or
disinfectant
as
compared
to
phenol
under
identical
conditions.
A
PC
higher
than
one
indicates
that
the
chemical
is
more
effective
than
phenol.
