Microorganisms of the Aquatic (Freshwater) Habitat

Mi croorganisms of The Aquatic (Freshwater) Habitat

1. Bacteria Most aquatic bacteria are gram negative because of the following reasons.

Gram negative envelope is suited for the nutrient diluted environment (oligotrophic).

Important hydrolytic enzymes are retained in the periplasmic space rather than being excreted and lost to the aquatic environment as in gram positive bacteria.

Gram negative bacterial cell wall contains lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that protects the cell against toxic molecules like fatty acids and antibiotics. Specially found are Pseudomonas sp., Flavobacterium, Achromobacter and Alcaligenes, Vibrio sp., Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus sp. Bacteria in surface region are  pigmented.

2. Molds Deuteromycetes members, Phycomycetes and Myxomycetes members are found in the marine environments.

3. Protozoa Species of Foraminifera and Rodidaxia and many ciliate species are common.
