Mutant
These mutants have lost the ability to use a particular carbon source and are usually affected either in transport or metabolism. The mutants which have lost the capacity to make specific cell components as the capsular polysaccharides and some those which exhibit altered colonial shape (arising from mutations affecting cell wall synthesis) also belong to this category.
