| Types | Effect on gene product |
| Nonsense | Prevents completion of translation of gene product truncated. |
| Missense | Changes a single amino acid in the product protein with reduced or altered activity produced. |
| Insertion/Deletion | (i)Small:Causes complete mistranslation of the mRNA occurring after the mutation produces protein with reduced protein with reduced activity. (ii)Large:Removes part or all of gene results in no gene product. |
