Selective Media

Selective media

Selective media contain specific chemicals which do not affect the growth of the bacterium to be isolated but discourage the growth of other bacteria in the mixture. For example, addition of sodium azide at specific concentration into media selectively isolates lactic acid bacterium. There are many other selective agents used as dyes (for brucellas), cetrimide (for Pseudomonas aeruginosa), tetrazolium (for halophytic bacteria), bile salts, antibiotics etc.
