Measurements of Area

Measurements of Area:
There are various methods to estimate the area of object like square-ruled grid technique, polar planitometer technique, cut and weigh method etc. They are discussed  as under.

(a)
Square-rued grid technique :
This method is quite similar in operation to the ocular graticule device for linear measurements. Ocular micrometer ruled with a rid of small equal-sided squares is used for the measurement. The area occupied by a grid-square is measured
by calibration with a stage micrometer. Keep the specimen on stage and focus. Count the number of squares occupied by the specimen and the area of specimen

(b) Polar planitometer  technique:
Polar planitometer technique is a mechanical device for measurement of area under a given curve. The instrument is used to calculate the area of photograph of object. The real value of specimen can be back calculated by applying image-scale ratio. It is necessary to calibrate planitometer using graph paper.

(c) The cut and weight technique:
Cut good quality millimeter graph paper in a definite size e.g. 10x10 cm and weigh. Calculate the weight of unit area (U) by dividing the value of weight area. On the unruled side of the graph paper, make an enlarged drawing of object by camera lucida or other suitable device. Cut the drawn area and weigh. From the value of weight of unit area of paper (U) calculate the area covered by specimen image. By dividing with the enlargement factor, the real area of specimen can be easily obtained.
