Microtome sections:
Microtomes are the precision instruments designed for cutting materials into sections, thin enough for examination with a microscope. Successful sectioning requires (i) properly prepared material, (ii) a sharp knife, (iii) proper microtome and (iv) a skilled operator, According to Lucas (1), “given solid substantial microtome, good results are largely a matter of personal skill in sharpening knives and manipulating the microtome”.
Here we wish to describe only the types of sections which are most commonly employed for light microscopy, namely bench microtome sections, sledge microtome sections and paraffin sections. Readers are requested to refer Richards (2), Bulter (3) Ruthman (4) and Johansen (5) for further details.
