In addition to the use mentioned above for bench micro­tome, this instrument is useful when material is hard. Fresh material after fixation may be directly mounted and after lubricating with a drop of alcohol, sections can be cut. This method gives better results t
han those with the bench micro­tome due to the rigidity of microtome and fixed blade..

This type of microtome can a:lso be converted into freezing micro­tome by attaching the cooling device
The sections obtained by above technique may be mounted directly in suitable mounting medium and place a cover glass over the preparation. The material is ready for the observation. If sections are fixed to the slide, they may be subjected to more complicated staining and mounting proce­dures as with paraffin sections.
