Microorganisms Degrading Lignin - The degradation of lignin is very slow and the rate of decomposition depends on the presence of other compounds such as cellulose and hemicelluloses. In fact, the rate of decomposition of plant material is determined to a great extent by the amount of lignin it contains. An increasing amount of lignin in plant materials leads to a decreased rate of decomposition. Lignin is highly resistant to microbial degradation however, certain fungi are known to degrade.
