Glutamine Synthetase GS Reaction

Glutamine Synthetase GS Reaction

In this reaction Glutamine is synthesized from glutamate. The reaction is catalyzed by glutamine synthetase and requires ATP. Due to the high affinity of glutamine synthetase for its substrate ammonia, the reaction functions at levels of free ammonia far below that required for the glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) reaction.

The glutamine synthase reaction is also used in the synthesis, of glutamine for protein synthesis

NH 4 + Glutamate + ATP-->L-Glutamine + ADP + Pi
