Nitrogenase -
Nitrogenase is the central and unique catalyst in the nitrogen fixation process. It binds molecular nitrogen and converts it into free ammonium ion.
Nitrogenase is very similar in all organisms from which it has been isolated. It has a very broad substrate specificity.
The enzyme catalyses the reduction of several compounds containing triple bonds.
