Predation

Predation
This is another example for a negative interaction wherein one organism engulfs the other. The populations are known as predator (bigger) and the prey (smaller). Usually, the predator engulfs the prey and it is a short-term interaction in contrast to parasitism. Predator-prey relationship is cyclic and in each cycle, prey population increases.

The predator Didinium nasutum preys on Paramaecium caudatum whose population declines and becomes extinct. Once this happens, Didinium population also declines. If Paramaecium population is able to hide and escape predation, this population survives and increases in number.
