L-Forms -
Klieneberger
in
1935
first
studied
a
form
of
Streptobacillus
moniliformis,
what
was
thought
to
be
a
symbiotic
species
of
PPLO.
He,
while
working
at
the
Lister
Institute
in
London,
called
this
form
L1,
L
being
the
initial
of
the
Lister
Institute
named
for
Lord
Lister,
pioneer
in
aseptic
surgery.
The
L1 organism
was
later
shown
by
Klieneberger
and
others
to
be
a
stable
protoplast
or
L-form
of
Streptobacillus
moniliformis
The
two
forms
interchange
under
proper
growth
conditions.
L-forms
of
bacteria
are
entirely
different
from
L
cells,
a
clone
of
animal
tissue
culture
cells.
Before
presenting
more
information
about
L-form
of
bacteria,
we
would
like
to
consider
in
brief
the
protoplast
and
spheroplast
