Formation of the 30S Initiation Complex

Formation of the 30S Initiation Complex - The first step in protein synthesis is the formation of the 308 initiation complex. This complex consists of mRNA, the 30S ribosomal subunit, initiator tRNA with attached amino acid N-formylmethionine (N-formylmethionyl-tRNA), guanosine triphosphate (GTP) and the three initiation factors (IF-1, IF-2 and IF-3). The order of binding of formylmethionyl-tRNA and mRNA is debated and it is not certain which comes first.
