Replication Direction

Replication Direction
Replication may proceed in one or both directions from the point of origin. Replication in one direction is called unidirectional replication , while that in both directions is called bidirectional replication.

Bidirectional replication has been reported in E. coli, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhimurinm, E. coli phages, the mammalian virus SV40 and mammalian cells, and appears to be more common. Unidirectional replication has been reported in the E. coli bacteriophages P2 and 186 and also in mitochondrial DNA of mouse LD cells.

An advantage of bidirectional replication is that the origin is completely duplicated before replication is completed. This permits control of replication at the site of origin, and also enables the beginning of chromosomal segregation without the need for completing entire replication.
