Replication During Interphase

Replication During Interphase
Replication takes place during the interphase between two mitotic cycles, and in the interphase proceeding meiosis. There is no replication of DNA during interkinesis between the first and second meiotic divisions. A small amount of DNA synthesis also takes place in the prophase of meiosis. (In Lilium it has been reported during zygotene and pachytene).

During interphase the amount of DNA doubles, and during anaphase of mitosis it is equally distributed between the two daughter cells. DNA synthesis does not take place during the entire interphase. It is confined to the synthesis (S) phase Between telophase and the S phase is the postmitotic gap phase (G1.).

Between the S phase and prophase is the premitotic gap phase (G2). The G1, S and G2 phases do not exist in the interphase of mitotically inactive cells or of differentiated cells. Lajtha (1963) has suggested the symbol Go for this stage, which is not a part of the mitotic cycle.
