Rhizobiotoxin
Evidence exists that a certain type of chlorosis in soybean is caused by a phytotoxin (low molecular weight amino compound) produced in nodules of the affected plants. This toxin is produced by several strains of Rhizobium japonicum in pure cultures as well as in nodules. In pure culture, addition of yeast extract and casaminoacids promotes the production of the toxin. The interesting feature of this type of soybean chlorosis is that nodules of chlorotic plants continue to fix nitrogen while elaborating the toxic metabolite.
