Methylation in Messenger RNA - mRNA

Methylation in Messenger RNA - mRNA - Methylation is the addition of methyl groups to a few adenylate residues, and to the two or three nucleotides at the 5' end of mRNA. There is experimental evidence which suggests that capping and methylation take place before polyadenylation. Where exactly mRNA is arranged within the premRNA structure is not clear.

There are models locating mRNA at the extreme 3' end of precursor mRNA and also at the 5' end. It is possible that different species of mRNA might be located at different positions within precursor mRNA. In eukaryotic cells mRNAs do not enter the cytoplasm as such, but in association with proteins to form nucleoproteins.

Nucleoproteins which remain as free complexes in the cytoplasm, without forming ribosomes, are termed informosomes. They represent mRNAs which remain for long periods in the cytoplasm without expressing themselves genetically.
