Mitoribosomes - Earlier reports indicated that the 55S ribosomes were significantly smaller than the 80S ribosomes.
For example, the average diameter of 558 mitoribosomes was found to be 145A, while that of 80S cytoribosomes was 190A.
Cytoribosomes were also assumed to be appreciably smaller than the 70S bacterial ribosomes. It has, however, been found that 55S mitoribosomes are actually larger than the 70S ribosome of E. coli.
