Subclasses of Mitoribosomes

Subclasses of Mitoribosomes - 55-60S mitoribosomes have been demonstrated in rats, rabbits, pigs, cows and hamsters. They also occur in chicken, sharks and locusts.

The sedimentation coefficients of verbebrate mitoribosomes range from 54S to 61S. Since the average is closer to 55S than 60S, the ribosomes are all called 55S ribosomes to distinguish them from the 70S bacterial ribosomes and the 80S cytoplasmic ribosomes.

The 55S mitoribosomes consists of a small 30S subunit and a large 40S subunit. Chooi and (Laird (1976) have reported the presence of 70S mitoribosomes in Drosophila. This suggests that there may be more than one sub class of animal mitoribosomes.

The reported sedimentation coefficients for mitoribosomes in protists, fungi and higher plants vary from 71S to 80S. Mitoribosomes resemble the 70S bacterial ribosomes in that they require a relatively high concentration of Mg++ for stabilization.
