Functions of Humus

Functions of Humus - Since it is an important part of the soil system it has a number of values in agriculture.
1. It improves the physical condition of the soil, making it soft and mellow. It increases the water holding capacity and aerates the        soil. With this soil becomes sticky and resists erosion.
2. It also influences the chemical properties of the soil, such as the solubility of soil of rock minerals, the oxidation reduction potential, and the buffering capacity.

3. It is a great storehouse of food materials for higher plants. It holds and slowly releases nitrogen, phosphorus, minerals, and also CO2 under the action of microorganisms.
