Staining Method of Schaeffer and Fulton, modified by Ashby
This method is a modified method of Schaeffer and Fulton (10) given by Ashby (11) in which direct heating is replaced by steam heating. The procedure is as under. Fix the smear  by minimum use of heat and place the slide on a rim of beaker of boiling water. Please see that the smear side is facing upwards.

When large droplets of water condense on the lower side of the slide,  cover the smear with 5% aqueous malachite green solution. Keep the water boiling and allow the stain to react for 1 minute. Wash the slide with cold water. Treat the smear with 0.5% safranin or 0.05% basic fuchsin for 30 seconds. Wash, dry and examine under oil-immersion objective.

Spore will be stained green, while cytoplasm will appear red in colour. If the microscope optics are not very good chromatic aberration may cause the spore and cell coming into focus at different settings of the microscope. Therefore, when the spores are sharply focused, the cells may be virtually invisible and vice versa. Lipid granules are not stained by this technique
