Agronomical Aspects

Vegetables respond better than cereal crops to the application of phosphatedissolving microorganisms. It was in USSR that a commercial preparation under the name 'phosphobacterin' containing bacterial cells of Bacillus megatherium was widely used for the first time. The usefulness of such bacterization of soils was rather overemphasised in spite of the fact that increase in grain yield was of the order of 5 to 10%.

Several field trials have been conducted by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute with wheat, berseem, maize, arhar and rice to test the efficiency of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria on the yield of crop plants. The results have shown that significant increases were obtained in 13 out of 38 experiments conducted in different agro-climatic.
