Rhinovirus Infections

Rhinovirus Infections
They are a large group of more than 100 small RNA viruses with icosahedral symmetry. Rhinos means nose. The. virion consists of a single molecule of RNA (2.3 x 106-2.8 x 106 daltons) and a capsid containing 60 copies of four different polypeptide chains. They are involved in respiratory infections.

They multiply in upper respiratory tract causing injury to mucosal cells. There is headache, sneezing, stuffy nose and sore throat, a condition called acute coryza, but more commonly as head cold. There is burning of eye and nasal membranes with little fever.

Of the many types, only 15-20 cause most infections in. humans. Vitamin C and chicken soup are useful. Interferons are being developed. For instance zinc ions are found to mask viral proteins and inhibit multiplication. They are generally transmitted through droplets. However, it may also be due to contact and through fomites.
