found
associated
with
a
number
of
virus
infections,
e.
g.
in
the
late
stage
of
the
replicative
cycle
of
adenoviruses
in
KB
cells,
in
infection
of
tobacco
leaves
with
TMV,
in
purified
virions
of
RSV
and
other
oncogenic
RNA
viruses,
in
E.
coli
infected
with
Qβ phage,
etc.
It has been speculated that viroids developed from low molecular weight RNAs that were originally virus induced, but have now become autonomous.
They represent degenerate virus entities.
