Viroids as Degenerative Viruses

Viroids as Degenerative Viruses  - Low molecular weight RNAs other than tRNAs and SS RNAs have been found associated with a number of virus infections, e. g. in the late stage of the replicative cycle of adenoviruses in KB cells, in infection of tobacco leaves with TMV, in purified virions of RSV and other oncogenic RNA viruses, in E. coli infected with Qβ phage, etc.
It has been speculated that viroids developed from low molecular weight RNAs that were originally virus induced, but have now become autonomous.
They represent degenerate virus entities.
