Virus Occurence

Virus Occurence - The occurrence of viruses in the cells of bacteria and higher plant and animals is well established.

Plant viruses
Most plant viruses have been found in angiosperms (flowering plants). Relatively few viruses are known in gymnosperms, ferns, fungi or algae.

Plant viruses are of great economic Importance, since they cause plant diseases in a variety of crops.

Animal viruses
Virus diseases are known in a variety of vertebrates, including fish, amphibia, birds and mammals. Important virus diseases of humans include poliomyelitis, smallpox, rabies, mumps, measles, yellow fever, influenza and encephalitis.

In invertebrates virus diseases nave been reported only in insects.

Bacteriophages
Viruses have been found in practically all groups of bacteria. The host range is confined within bacterial groups, e. g. bacteriophages active in micrococci do not multiply in streptococci.

Sometimes there is considerable host specificity, because of the ability of bacteria to acquire resistance by mutation. Thus a bacteriophage may multiply only in certain strains of E. coli.
