I. Productive - Synthesis and release of progeny virus
1. Lytic - host cell killed, e.g. DNA viruses
2. Nonlytic - no noticeable cytopathic effects on host cells,e.g. RNA viruses
II Nonproductive - Progeny virus not produced
1. Abortive - loss of viral genome after infection
2. Defective-viral genome incomplete : Part missing
3. Nonpermissive - host cells lack certain factors
4. Inactive - Viral genome not transcribed, partly or wholly
