Advantages of Chlorine as Disinfectant

Advantages of Chlorine as Disinfectant - Of all chemical agents chlorine is the widely used disinfectant. This fact can be related to the following advantages of chlorine as a disinfectant:

1. It is readily available as gas, liquid or powder.

2. It is cheap.

3. It is easy to apply due to relatively high solubility (7000mg /   litre).

4. It leaves a residual in solution, which while n6t harmful to man, provides protection in the distribution system.

5. It is toxic to most microorganisms, interfering with metabolic activities.

6. It also plays an important role in the treatment of cyanide       wastes which are highly toxic.

However, chlorine has some disadvantages.

1. It is a toxic gas and requires careful handling.

2. It can cause taste and odor problems especially in the presence of phenols.
