Landfilling - The increased costs of sludge disposal paved the way to develop new technologies which will reduce the amount of sludge produced in sewage treatment.
Water treatment produces less sludge than the sewage treatment. Moreover sludge from water treatment has low organic content and hence can be disposed by landfill without any objection. Sludge from softening process contains high content of calcium and in this way desirable for agricultural use.
Sewage sludge can also be used as a landfill material thus becoming an useful way for land reclamation. For example, can be dumped in old quarries. But there is a possibility of groundwater being contaminated.
