Other Disinfecting Agents of Sewage Water

Other Disinfecting Agents of Sewage Water - Recently it has been found that the chlorinated waters have a serious impact on the aquatic life of the receiving waters. As a result of this, disinfection alternatives have been developed. However certain treatment plants continue to use chlorine with a dechlorination step before discharge into water bodies.

The newly developed processes employ ozone and ultraviolet rays for disinfection. Ozone, a powerful oxidising agent, is mainly used in the oxidation of certain industrial wastewaters which can not be treated effectively by conventional biological oxidation processes.Ultraviolet radiation, a kind of electromagnetic radiation, can also be used for disinfecting wastewaters before discharge.

However, the very low level of residual effect and higher cost make these processes less significant. In addition, the requirement of clarity for effective disinfection by ultraviolet radiation is not at all possible in the case of wastewater.
