Biological Processes for Removal of Nitrogen by ASP
It involves a series of aerobic and anaerobic treatment stages. Prolonged aeration is necessary to convert the nitrogen-containing wastes to nitrates. Mer conversion to nitrate, it is possible to remove most of the nitrogen from the effluent by creating anaerobic condition for denitrification. Hence aeration is discontinued and organic matter is added. Anaerobic oxidation of organic matter converts the nitrate to nitrogen gas which escapes into the atmosphere.
